PREVIEW VIDEO (click the photo): SOFOCLES’ ANTIGONE BY EKSTAN, IN ANCIENT GREEK WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES
Antigoni of Sophocles, directed by Yannis Stamatiou, is a theatrical production of the theatre company EKSTAN with Greek actors.
The director uses the authentic ancient Greek text of Sophocles, with simultaneous projection of hypertitles in English (or in any other language upon agreement).
No attempt is made to reconstruct the ancient greek pronunciation, the actors are using the modern greek pronunciation.
Music is written on the standards of ancient Greek music and is played live on stage with the use of an ancient Greek lyre.
Costumes refer to the ancient Greek world.
The use of ancient Greek language in Antigoni’s performance gives a distinct dimension to the role playing by the actors.
The actors play the roles with simplicity and naturalness. The aim of the director is to tell the myth, which remains timeless even for today’s society, but using the original language of drama as written by the great dramatist Sophocles.
The discourse of ancient Greek language, the melody, the rhythm and the sound of the words go back to the depths of the cultural memory of the actors and contribute to the creation of a special atmosphere that characterizes the performance.
